2. What is this opponent doing differently?
3. How strong is the evidence?
4. If I deviate, how far should I take the exploit?
That last question is often ignored.
Players do not only exploit too little. They also over-exploit. They notice one leak and push the adjustment so far that their own range becomes easy to attack.
The goal is not maximum deviation. It is the highest-EV deviation supported by the evidence.
 
WHY DEEP STACKS MAKE THIS HARDER
Deep-stack poker increases the value of position and magnifies strategic mistakes.
A slightly loose preflop call can create difficult turn and river decisions when stacks are 300bb deep. A strange preflop size can produce an unfamiliar stack-to-pot ratio. A straddle or ante changes which ranges want to enter the pot.
Multiway pots add another layer because many heads-up heuristics stop transferring cleanly.
This is why live cash players need a flexible process rather than a memorized tree.
